How can PicoSure achieve better clearance with fewer treatments?

Traditional lasers such as the Q-Switched often need over 10 treatments to achieve good clearance. Whereas the picosecond laser used by the PicoSure machine can remove your tattoo more completely in fewer treatments

How is this possible? Traditional Q-Switched lasers heat the ink in your tattoo breaking it into small ‘pieces’, but the patented PressureWave™ impact from the picosecond laser delivers ultra-short pulses of energy to the skin shattering the ink into tiny particles. These tiny particles are disposed of by your body’s immune system much easier.

The illustration gives a simple view of how PicoSure breaks down the ink in your tattoo into tiny particles. View our before and after picture gallery here.

How many treatments using the PicoSure laser will I need?

We’ve treated thousands of clients with our PicoSure laser and Q-Switched RevLite laser and have found that the RevLite laser on average would take 10 – 15 treatments for a small professional tattoo (up to 5cm sq). In contrast, just 4 – 6 treatments* with the PicoSure will achieve better tattoo clearance. So that’s less time in the clinic and the removal of your unwanted tattoo sooner!

Studies have found similar results with the Q-Switched alexandrite laser taking an average of 8.9 and 8.5 treatments to obtain greater than 95% clearance in tattoo pigment. Whereas another study with the picosecond alexandrite laser found an average of 4.25 treatment sessions were needed.

*Results may vary from person to person. Many factors affect the number of treatments needed.

How much does PicoSure cost?

This is dependent on two key aspects – the size of your tattoo and the type of tattoo. A larger professional tattoo will need more treatments than a smaller amateur tattoo, and the treatments will last longer too. A typical small tattoo, 5cm x 5cm, will take around 4 – 6 treatments to remove and cost around £1280 – £1600 in total. View our pricing guide below.

Tattoo Size Cost per treatment
Very Small (up to 2.5 cm sq) £180
Small (up to 5cm sq) £320
Medium (up to 10cm sq) £500
Large (up to 15cm sq) £800
Very Large (greater than 15cm sq) Price on request

Tattoo size guide

We created this tattoo size guide to help give you an idea of what size classification your tattoo falls under. Unlike other clinics, we are flexible and always look at the size, shape, design and density of each tattoo to give a personalised and accurate price. If your tattoo has gaps in the design, we take this into consideration and adjust the price accordingly.

If you are unsure of your tattoo size then please don’t hesitate to send us a picture via our contact form and we’ll get back to you with an accurate price.

PicoSure FAQs

Does laser tattoo removal have side effects?

There are natural side effects that do occur and are positive signs that your body is already starting to heal. They include, white frosting, blistering, scabbing, swelling and itching. Other less common side effects include, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation and scarring. For more detailed information, read this post.

Does PicoSure laser tattoo removal hurt?

It generally does hurt to some extent and largely depends on the location of your tattoo and your personal pain threshold. Patients often cite that it’s a similar sensation to an elastic band being rapidly pinged against your skin. Get a more detailed answer by reading this blog post.

How much does PicoSure laser tattoo removal cost?

This is largely dependent on two key aspects: the size of your tattoo and the type of tattoo. A larger professional tattoo will need more treatments than a smaller amateur tattoo, and the treatments will last longer too. A typical small tattoo (5cm x 5cm) will take around 4 – 6 treatments to remove and cost around £1280 – £1600 in total. View our pricing guide further up the page.

Does PicoSure work on darker skin types?

There is a higher risk of hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation with the PicoSure laser on darker skin tones. This is due to the shorter wavelengths. As such, we do not recommend PicoSure, but instead recommend the RevLite laser which is the safest laser for darker skin types.

How long do you have to wait between PicoSure treatments?

A minimum of 6-8 weeks to allow for the treated area to recover.

Can you go in the sun before or after PicoSure treatment?

Sun exposure or sunbeds should be avoided 6 weeks prior to treatment, for the duration of the treatment and for 4 weeks after. The Clinic advises the use of reputable sun protection of factor 30+, or protection of the treated area from sunshine/sunbeds. Treatment of an area after recent exposure to sunlight or sunbeds could result in permanent hypopigmentation of the treated area.

How long does it take to see results from PicoSure tattoo removal?

In most cases, fading can be seen after the first treatment once the area has healed. Typically, for a small professional tattoo (up to 5cm sq) you can expect to see over 95% clearance after 4 – 6 treatments with the PicoSure laser.

What ink colours can the PicoSure laser remove?

The PicoSure laser can achieve impressive tattoo clearance on darker inks from just one treatment. Black, brown, purple, blue, and green can be treated at 755nm wavelength. Red, orange and yellow can be treated at 532nm wavelength.

Is there any specific PicoSure aftercare advice?

Yes, we provide you with an aftercare leaflet on the day of your treatment. The main advice to note is to avoid sun exposure (including sun beds) for at least, 4 weeks prior to treatment and 4 weeks after treatment. If it’s not possible to avoid the sun then don’t stay exposed for long periods and always use a sunscreen of a minimum SPF30 on exposed areas. Avoid hot baths/showers, saunas, swimming pools, creams, body lotions, perfumes and restrictive clothing for 48 hours after your treatment. It’s important you follow the advice for a speedier recovery and optimum results.

What is the minimum age for PicoSure tattoo removal?

The minimum age for PicoSure tattoo removal is 18 years.
