Causes

Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched. They can appear anywhere on the body, but are most common on the abdomen, breasts, buttocks, arms and thighs.

In many cases, stretch marks are caused by weight gain and weight loss, which is why they are prominent on areas of the body where fat is stored. They also can appear during puberty and during pregnancy. If you have a family history of stretch marks, you may be more susceptible to developing them.

Symptoms

Stretch marks typically appear as indented streaks or lines in the skin. Immature stretch marks are often a reddish or purple colour. As they age, stretch marks become a pale white or silver colour and are less noticeable.

The streaks can appear as flat lines or they can be slightly raised. Some stretch marks feel “wrinkly” and have a rougher texture than normal skin.

Although they are physically harmless and painless, some people find their stretch marks unsightly and distressing. This can lead to low self-confidence.
